Combining the light and heat of a timber-frame greenhouse with the storage of a shed, they have one greenhouse section with windows for potting and growing plants, typically with staging, and one shed section, for storing tools, compost, and equipment. Always wanted a hobby greenhouse! Installation was relatively straightforward and preparing the foundation took longer than actual assembly. To give additional height, I built on top of 6 x 6 treated lumber, digging them down so the greenhouse itself sits approximately 2 above my patio. This added height really helps! I installed two 2' by 3' raised beds (20 deep) on one side and double planting shelves on the back and opposite side. The floor is decorative stone with flagstone walk down the middle. While it is slightly cramped, I started tomatoes, spring onions, carrots, and baby greens, all from seed in the two beds. This was in October. It is now February and I have tomato plants full of flowers, have been eating fresh greens, am waiting for the peppers and carrots. Ten different kinds of herbs on the shelves and some seed started veggies for the garden come spring. An electric heater keeps the greenhouse in the 50 to 70 degree range. To help with insulation, I covered the greenhouse with a sheet of 10 mil clear plastic. I could use a lot more sunlight, but being winter in Pennsylvania, I'll take what I can get. All In all, I'm very pleased with this product. The important thing to remember is the foundation. Don't skimp, even though the construction is fairly substantial, I don't think it would take a hurricane to take it down!
For a greenhouse gardener a size of the structure is the most important feature. It means how much fruit and veg you can produce all year round. An established greenhouse brand like Palram has a series of structures: Americana, Balance, Bella, Hybrid, Snap&Grow and so on.
To help you to decide which greenhouse to buy I run some numbers to see how much you are paying for a square foot of growing space. A little table shows the average price that you will pay for a square foot to grow your plants or to keep the flower pots.
Features like its apex roof are in keeping with traditional greenhouses. Its 989mm x 1239mm footprint means it's also small enough to stand in small gardens where space is a premium, without being too intrusive.
Available in aluminium, black or anthracite/black, this glasshouse can be personalised to best suit the space you have available. A low threshold gives it easy access for wheelchairs or for manoeuvring large garden tools in and out.
Swgreenhouses.co.uk lets you customize your greenhouse glazing on the product page too, with a choice of horticultural glass, toughened safety glass, or polycarbonate glazing. The glass options are ideal if you want a Victorian style glasshouse that makes attractive garden buildings. Polycarbonate is best if you're concerned about safety, and horticultural glass is a compromise between style and safety (but is the most expensive option).
